Understanding your futon mattress upgrade options for your "futon package"

You can select a mattress that is not in the drop down option for your futon package. However, we have wisely chosen the best futon mattresses that are the most appropriate for your futon frame that also cover all price points. Please contact us if you would like to choose a different mattress not available in the drop down.

Understanding the Different Categories of Futon Mattresses
Futon mattresses can be classified by the ingredients within. Learn more about all cotton, cotton & foam, wool, innerspring, premium high density foam, and memory foam.

The Best Futon Mattresses

All Cotton(no foam) Futon Mattresses:
Go back to the basics of futon mattresses with an all cotton mattress. Choose different thicknesses from 4" to 10". Choose either twin, full, queen or king. Please contact us for custom sizes. Keep in mind that all cotton futons are best used on a platform bed. If you plan on using it on a futon frame, it is suggested to have a combination of cotton and foam. The foam will give the mattress shape and stability when used on a futon frame. All cotton futon mattresses tend to be firm and should be rotated from time to time.

Cotton and Foam Combination Futon Mattresses:
Foam is commonly used in cotton futon mattresses to give its shape and keep the cotton in place. You will find different layering configurations of foam and cotton. Foam will provide a slightly softer sleeping surface. Choose either 6" Single Foam, 8" or 10" double foam, 6" foam core (moonlight mattress), feather touch, or 8" double foam with wool and cotton (woolwrap). Good for using on a futon frame or platform bed.

Cotton & Foam Futon Mattresses

Innerspring Futon Mattresses:
Innerspring futon mattresses are some what of a new concept in Western futons. Similar to a conventional mattress, an innerspring futon mattress will provide a softer bouncier feel. The spring coils will keep you body a good distance from the slats of the frame. Innerspring futon mattresses are great for those that prefer or are more used to the conventional mattress feel. Better used on an all wood frame then metal frame.

All High Density Foam Futon Mattresses (no cotton):
High density foam futon mattresses are considered the premium for futons. Manufactured by Otis Bed in Buffalo New York, these futons will last the longest and will retain their shape for 10 plus years. Otis designs their futons with combinations of 2.0 high density block panel and convoluted foam, stronger and more durable than most sofa cushions. Clean boxed edges give these futon mattresses a sleek look when used on any futon frame. Lightweight makes it easier to open and close your frame as well as providing excellent seating and sleeping support for your body. Available in twin, full/double, queen and king. Please contact us for custom sizes.

Memory Foam Futon Mattresses:
Futon mattresses with memory foam are considered top of the line for a few reasons. This category of futon mattress works the best on a futon frame because of how easily it bends. These futons contain 2-3" of visco elastic memory foam supported by multiple layers of high density foam, giving you a supple surface that will mold to your body's pressure points. The memory foam enables the mattress to rest nicely on the frame making it easier to open and close your futon frame. One great advantage of having a memory foam futon mattress is that it will not retain the crease in the middle when the frame is open as a bed for sleeping.

Understanding your futon mattress upgrade options for your complete futon package:

6” Cotton:

Made with 100% Joy cotton batting. Firm. A good starter mattress for occasional use. Not recommended for everyday or long term sleeping.

8” Double Foam:

2 layers of 1.5 density foam sandwiched in between 100% Joy cotton batting. Foam helps keep the cotton in place from shifting providing a more evenly distributed cotton futon mattress. Foam also gives more cushioning for better sitting and sleeping. Recommended for everyday sitting and occasional sleeping.

8” Woolwrap

2 layers of 1.5 high density foam sandwiched in between 100% Joy cotton batting, encapsulated with an inch layer of New Zealand virgin wool. Wool is the most resilient natural fiber used in mattresses. Its tightly interlocking curls and strength enhance the longevity of the mattress, while its soft, springy fibers trap air within- making it an efficient insulator. This mattress can be used for everyday sitting and sleeping. This is considered a firm mattress

9” Moonlight

A combination of 6” of block panel and convoluted foam positioned in the core of the mattress surrounded by 3 inches of 100% Joy cotton batting. Because the foam is positioned in the middle of the mattress, it pushes the cotton up, providing a more even sitting and sleeping surface. The foam in the middle provides that extra give or cushion for better comfort. This mattress is recommended for everyday sitting and sleeping. This is considered a medium firm mattress.

9” Feathertouch

6 two inch layers of soft convoluted foam surrounded by Joy natural cotton batting. This mattress will give you a more softer sofa cushion feel for sitting. Because there is less cotton in this mattress, it is much lighter making it easier to open and close your futon frame. This mattress is recommended more for sitting than everyday sleeping. Although it could be used for frequent sleeping, people with sensitive back issues are better on a firmer mattress. This is considered a soft mattress.

9” Innerspring: Comfort Coil

With two layers of super-soft foam and JOY® cotton batting. Custom-designed, its SuperCenter Innerspring core unit has two rows of barrel-shaped coils to enhance the mattress' durability. This mattress provides a more conventional innerspring mattress feel which keeps you a safe distance from the slats of the futon frame. Although the springs will give you a nice comfortable sleep, this mattress is not recommended to use as a primary sofa for sitting. The concentration of your body weight in the sitting position in one spot will wear the mattress faster, as opposed to sleeping where your body weight is more evenly distributed. This mattress is best used as a secondary guest bed.

Premium: Stratosphere

6" thickness (10" of overstuffed goods compressed to fit inside a 6" border). Industrial strength 2.0 high density foam is used giving this mattress a nice longevity of 10 plus years! Because this mattress is thinner, it will give you more seating depth. This mattress is lightweight, making it easier to open and close your futon frame. A squared, or boxed edge, rather than a rounded cotton futon mattress, gives a clean and straight sofa cushion look. Although the Stratosphere could be used as an everyday bed, it is better for everyday sitting or occasional to long term sleeping for those guests that just won’t leave. The Haley 110 would be a better option for everyday sleep. This mattress is considered medium firm.

Premium: Haley 110

8" thickness (14" of overstuffed goods compressed to fit inside a 8" border). 9" of soft and medium-firm high quality convoluted 2 pound foam creates the medium firm feel . This mattress will give you a sofa cushion feel as well as quality comfort for sleeping. With clean boxed squared edges, this mattress will retain it’s shape for 10 plus years. This mattress is perfect for everyday sitting and sleeping long term. Highly recommended for people who live in studio apartments that need the two functions of comfortable sitting and sleeping in one mattress.

Premium: Pulsar Memory Foam

8" thickness (10 1/2" of overstuffed goods compressed to fit inside a 8" border). 7 1/2" of high quality foam, including 4 1/2" blend of convoluted 2 and 2 1/2" pound foam. Top layer is 3" of body sensor, pressure reducing 3 lb. High density viscoelastic foam. Memory foam makes for the best futon mattress. It folds easily on the futon frame and will not retain the crease in the middle. This is the Mercedes Benz of all futon mattresses giving you superior sitting and sleeping comfort. This mattress will last 10 plus years for everyday sleeping and sitting.
